Prepare to fumble around for your knife and fork and have a giggle along the way as you and you set out on this gastronomical adventure with your nearest and dearest. Now, distinguishing between a variety of different scents and tastes is one thing, but navigating your cutlery in complete darkness is another. The theory is that when we take sight away, our other senses step in to help identify flavors and smells. How good can food taste? That’s the question on everyone’s lips at Dining in the Dark. There’s no need to be afraid of the dark when your other senses are heightened by delicious flavors, tantalizing smells and the sweet sounds of a bubbly beverage being poured. Unsuspecting diners will choose between a vegan, seafood and meat option before indulging in sensorial surprises. This summer, these unforgettable culinary experiences will be putting taste buds to the test at Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile and Hubbard Inn with the help of a fabulous three-course surprise menu. The burst of flavors are all the more powerful and the aromatic scents of the food smell even stronger, which in turn elevates the dining experience to new and exciting heights. But, why? Well, when sight isn’t an option, your other senses are open to new intensities of tastes and smells. ![]() The only not-so-small difference is that each and every diner is completely blindfolded. My husband booked the dinner and promised he'd do that for me and it worked! Overall, it's an amazing experience. The unique Dining in the Dark experience offers everything you’d except from a top-notch dinner date in Chicago – excellent food, attentive service and an unbeatable atmosphere. ![]() The dessert however was PERFECT and yummy! If you're also weird about textures, have whomever is with you try the course first to let you know what it's like. I know that when you take one of your senses away, the others are heightened, so it was either our taste buds were extremely heightened or the food was overly seasoned. The food was pretty good but I felt like some of the courses were over-seasoned. We heard several glasses break during our meal. Definitely don't just waive your hands about looking for things. So, if you're afraid of the dark, it's not to be taken lightly! It was easy enough to navigate the table as long as you just slid your hand to find your glass or utensils. I'm stressing the darkness because there were several women that were seated with what sounded like a large group that freaked out within a few minutes of being there and begged to leave. Why? Because it didn't make a difference! It's really that dark! The only light you see is the little red light from the waiter's night vision goggles. When we walked into the dining room, I was shocked at just how truly dark it was! I've never experienced a dark like that before and spent a lot of time just sitting there with my eyes closed. ![]() Lets first start off with stating how VERY nervous I was to do this dinner! I am very picky about food textures and was extremely nervous about not knowing what I was going to eat. ![]()
